INSTRUCTIONS

This is the Module Information Booklet for this module:

EXERCISE

Instructions:
You are to practice and showcase thorough understanding of creating vehicle and props design via series of continues exercises given. You are to pick and draw 3 types of vehicle designed for either land, air or water. Here you will be exercising fundamentals as listed below:

- Deconstructing and constructing vehicles from references

- Form and Function

- Perspective (Pick 1 type X 5 sketches min )

- Line Weight ( Pick 1 and add line weights to the perspective drawing done)

- Applying Colors ( Pick 1 and apply varieties to obtain appealing colors)

- Texturing (pick 1 and test with materials and texture bashing)

This was a rendered photobash of my vehicle design.

TASK 1

Instructions:

You are to create a suitable vehicle and props design for the world that you have proposed across for character design and anatomy (optional) or you can have it separate.. Your vehicle and props should communicate its functionality that reflect the world proposed. Note that for vehicle (man-made mechanical ), you are to choose 1 minimum from any of these types (land, air, water), whilst props are the components suitable to your vehicle where you will be continuously developing till your Final Project. Here you will be showcasing your ideation process as listed below:

- Moodboard and style guide

My initial idea was to create a motorcycle. I wanted to create a futuristic styled bike.

- Silhouettes (10 pieces in 1 sheet)

After doing some very very rough silhouette sketch, Mr Kannan suggested I go for the industrial styled military bike.

- Rough Value painting (5 chosen from the silhouettes) - 1 sheet

- Thumbnail Sketches

After expanding on the military bike, I created the thumbnails. Mr Kannan suggested I proceed with idea number 3 as it was the most interesting shape with the person standing on the back (this would later be changed).

- Design breakdowns - min 1 sheet

I then made a simple breakdown of the props I had in mind and added some color.

TASK 2

Instructions:

You are to continue developing your vehicle design from project 1. Pick one of your vehicle and props concept to be extended with design application that communicates well and appeal to the target audiences. Here you have to showcase your development process. Process includes:

- Thumbnails (Vehicle and Props Breakdowns)

- Value studies

- Color studies

- Textures

I then proceeded with blocking out the shapes of the bike in 3D using the drawings done previously.

Here are my earlier attempts:

I was then made aware of a glaring issue with the overall shape of the bike. I'll not include it as it is obscene :P

I proceeded to change the shapes of some parts of the bike and tried following the influence of a spider from the front view.

Feedback: The front silhouette of a bike has to be menacing. Refer to kawasaki and other sports bikes for the silhouette and shape design.

Reference:

I then redesigned my bike to have more parts sticking out and more top heavy as most modern bikes have thin wheels and a heavier-looking top.

I also changed the style design of the bike to follow more of a grasshopper design with the bike stance looking like arms from an insect.

With this, I created a style sheet and prop breakdown along with orthographic views of the bike traced in Photoshop

I then decided to rework the front of the bike again to make it seem more aggressive. I also proceeded with blocking out the rough colors of the individual parts.

Here is the full turn around of the colored bike along with lighting  and props breakdown:

TASK 3

Instructions:

Final Polished for each vehicles (Land, Water and Air). Call sheet showcasing the breakdown's of your props, interior and engine (if necessary). Key Art For all 3 vehicle concept as example attached. Call sheet needs to be well laid out.

- Color studies

After having the final blockout done with the rough colors, I began the long and lovely process of texturing and hand-painting the details on the bike.

I wanted to have this bike in a muddy scene with the bike looking a bit more worn and ragged but still functional of course.

Here are the final texturing:

- Textures

With the texturing done, the exciting part for me began!

- Key Art

- Props Breakdown

- Orthographic

REFLECTIONS

This module took me out of my comfort zone and flipped me upside down, but i loved every moment of it. Never thought id make my own vehicle design and texturing from scratch, but here we are. I hope to create many more concepts of vehicles to implement into my own passion projects. Mr Kannan was very insightful with his vehicle design knowledge and was very hands on in pushing me to do the best I can
