LECTURES

Week 6

In this weeks class, we learnt about colour grading and colour correcting. Colour correcting is to fix the exposure and lighting for video clips. Colour grading is to enhance the visual appeal and look of the video output. Colour correcting should come before colour grading.

In colour grading, editors use LUTS (Look-up-tables) to help simplify the colour grading process.

Week 7

During this week, we were taught audio shaping.

Frequency range:

Hertz (Hz) - Human hearing frequency range is from 20Hz to 20,000Hz
There are 7 subsets of frequencies used to help define the ranges.

Dynamic range:

Decibels (dB) - The threshold of human hearing is measured as 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and the threshold of pain is 130dB SPL.

Space:

Mono Vs Stereo - Mono sounds are recorded using single audio channel, while stereo sounds are recorded using two audio channels.

INSTRUCTIONS

This is the Module Information Booklet for this module:

TASK 2 / Project 2(a)

Briefing

We were required to shoot an instagram reel/tiktok video about ourselves, one aspect of us or any topic that matters to us.

Requirements

The video must consist of the following shot sizes:
  • Close up shot
  • Frontal MCU (soft background)
  • Frontal MS (soft background)
  • 3/4 angling MCU shot (with shallow DOF)
  • Low angle Wide shot

Part 1

Mr. Martin provided us with a google slides document to fill out.

Here is the slides:

My favorite video trends and my rational behind my selections:

This video showcases different transitions in a creative eye catching way. Featuring some nice framing shots and aesthetic video colorings. The second video ive selected is also from the same account.

My rational is the same as video 1. It is a compilation of different transitions which I will be using in my own video.

This video features more intricate transitions and framings however keeping the same style and pacing as the first 2 videos. This video is my current favorite as it is much more refined and aesthetic in my opinion.

Infuse your CREATIVITY

If one idea is chosen, how would you make it better and unique?

I personally would add a few more sound design elements to see the effect of the transitions and movements in the video. This could enhance the viewing pleasure of the video.

I would also find more creative uses for these transitions and implement them in different ways.

About Idea

Description:

Id like to make it about the core essence of who I am as a creative. Showcasing my creative process and what visually goes on in my head. The aesthetic and vide represents who I am as a person.

Music choice:

Devault, Tommy Genesis, Slayyyter - Never Like Me

My choice for this song is the pacing of the song. The time for each beat allows me to have sufficient screen time for each scene while still allowing me to match the pacing of the song. It also fits the theme and vibe of the video im going for.

Here is my moodboard and reference for my video

Moodboard

This is my storyboard for the video:

Storyboard

I began filming as soon as I got approval from Mr. Martin. It took me two days of filming to get all the footage I felt like I needed.

Footage from 2 days of filming

After compiling all the required footages, I began arranging them and trimming them to get the transitions I planned. I then proceeded to add the visual effects and work on the speed ramping as well as smoothening out the transitions.

I also exported some clips into after effects to work on them even more. Using the Adobe bridge between the two programs makes the workflow very seamless.

Here is the final output:

TASK 2 / Project 2(b)

Briefing

We are required to do a production shoot replicating some scenes from Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO) and create a short trailer using the clips.

Requirements
  • Delegate roles
  • Create Storyboard
  • Prepare required props and outfits

Part 2

Mr. Martin provided us with a google drive link for the template of the storyboard and also reference clips for us to refer to during the shoot.

We were then required to fill out the storyboard accordingly and identify all the different elements in the different scenes such as lighting, camera angles, outfits, props and such.

Here are the storyboards filled out:

After some discussion with our groupmates, I was assigned the role of Waymond. I then had to prepare outfits similar to the scenes, while my other groupmates provided the props I was missing.

These are the assigned roles:

Producer: Siew Yong

Director: Amber
Assitance Director: Cheng Tao

D.O.P: Nicole(Kiew Ting Yi)
Assistance Camera: Sueanne

Lighting Crew:
1. Stefanie
2.Kaiqi

Art Director: Jiayi

Location Sound: Kaiqi

Boom Operator: Fathimath

Actor:
1. Jiayi
2. Nabil

Extra:
3. Cheng Tao

Here are some behind the scenes:

These are the files we exported from the camera and audio recorded from the production shoot:

I then proceeded to cut the clips and match the audio accordingly in Premier pro

Mr Martin suggested we do not follow the sequence from the storyboard and recreate the sequence in our own way. With this freedom given, I decided to make an action trailer following this tutorial:

This video taught me how to break down the trailers segments into 3 or 4 parts.

The hook/the cold open:
A scene that grabs the audiences attention leaving them with questions regarding the movie. This can be a funny scene, serious dramatic scene or a part of the story with a lot of action.

Act 1:
Just like the act structure of movies, the first act introduces the protagonist and the problem they must face

Act 2:
This is the climax and the highlight of the movie.

Act 3:
Normally a resolution scene, but done in way that doesn't give any spoilers. It mainly has scenes summing up the story.

Following these structures, I reorganized the clips on my timeline with dramatic cuts.

Once setting down the base of the movie, it was time to find all the sounds required for the trailer. For this to be done, I followed another youtube tutorial regarding sound design.

In the video, they mentioned breaking down sound design into 3 A's; Ambient, Action and Accent.

Accent:
This mainly included, wooshes, rises, booms, hits, transitions and other forms of sounds that accentuate motion.

Action:
These are the physical sounds from actions done in the video. For example: Door opening, car revving, keyboard clacking, punch sounds

Ambient:
This is mainly the ambient background noise or the environment noise. For example: Crowd chatter, pedestrian walking, traffic noises, background radio noise, birds chirping.

With these in mind I begun laying out all the different layers of sounds in the video.

Including the actors dialogue and music, I required 11 audio layers to create the sound design of this trailer

During week 6, Mr Martin also taught us about Color grading and Color correction. Using what was taught, I color corrected each individual clip from the scenes, remembering to copy the lumetri color profile onto the same clips that have been chopped up.

I then tried my hand at color grading. I found some LUTs online and decided to apply it.

It made the colors more vibrant while keeping the contrast. I felt like this fit the theme and style of trailer I was going for.

I then adjusted all the volumes of the audio channels

Here is the final output:
