LECTURES

Week 1

During this week, Mr Martin required us to list 3 short stop motion films.

Here are the stop motion films:

I really liked the visual transitions and aesthetic of this stop motion animation. The brilliant use of sound design also helps create believability and conveys the message to the viewer really well.

This video also has really high level of detail considering its a clay stop motion animation. The color palette used throughout the video is also visually aesthetic.

My favorite scene is the clay smiling at the viewer, and the water droplets floating. The water droplets are actually very well depicted and the physics can be felt through the screen.

The level of detail in this animation is crazy. They used wood sculptures and made actual ligaments and links to all parts of the puppet.

Again, the use of sound design in this video is fantastic, the storyline and mood are well depicted, and the action scenes are amazingly choreographed and captivating to watch.

The classic food Lego cooking stop motion animation. They switched it up a little by using actual vegetables. BUT, when cut, they become lego bricks.

There is minimal sound design in this, but the sounds that are there, make sense and fits the scene. It gives a very calm, morning routine kind of feel.

Proposal

Nabil Julius

During the shooting phase, we realized that having small paper cutouts was going to make it harder for us to make the animation look good. We decided to overcome this by taking a picture of all the cutouts individually and animate it in After Effects.

Tao did the animations for the papercuts and some digitally drawn animations in Act 1 and Act 2.

After receiving the files from Tao, my role was to stitch it all together and add effects to the entire animation.

Act 1

I made a simple background from a cartoon tree and a realistic picture with grass. I didnt bother with changing the trees to greyscale as there was already an adjustment layer in After effects that did that.

I also drew a short animation to transition between act 1 and act 2 where the main character begins to feel the effects of the mushroom.

Act 2

For the trip, I just used an image Tao sent and removed the eyes and make them transparent. I then used some looping gifs from Giphy as the background and the eyes.

Act 3

For the end of the trip, I drew another animation of his eyes coming back around and the main character looking around.

For the ending of the animation, we wanted to have a giant mushroom eat the main character. Tao attempted to do the animation for that but I decided to use a different approach as it fit the video better.

There was a short animation of it walking up to the main character.

I then used Taos other asset he made of the fork.
