Task 3: Design

1. Recap of task 3:

We were required to analysie the design of our choice in Task 2 and produce a work of design, inspired by the art piece of chosen as a reaction to it. We need to apply our knowledge of design principles in our own creation while still conveying the visual message that ties into the UNSDG goal of our choice.

I decided to reference an old art piece I made for the sci-fi structure and glass casing in my final design output to give it a more industrial cyberpunk style of edit.

Ive decided to follow the color scheme of the album art of this song and poster design for my alternate final design (figure 2.6)

 Sketches:

3D designed figure of a virtual tree used on the signboard to show the current generation of people what trees might have looked like in the past.

4. Final design:

figure 2.1 Final design

In this art piece, a person is seen wearing a gas mask with tubes attached to the oxygen generator. This has become the new normal for that generation as functioning ecosystems ceased to exist. The synthetic green liquid in the machine acts as chlorophyll to create oxygen which then feeds into the tubes attached to produce oxygen. A sign board can be seen in the background of the art piece which states " breathe fresh oxygen today!".

As the year 3024 dawns upon a world devoid of functional ecosystems, Chlorotech Inc.'s groundbreaking innovation emerges as a beacon of hope amidst environmental desolation. Their futuristic device harnesses advanced technology to synthesize chlorophyll and produce fresh oxygen, offering a lifeline to a suffocating population. Chlorotech's solution pioneers a new era of survival and adaptation, challenging the very fabric of humanity's existence. Yet as the world grapples with uncertainty and the specter of extinction looms large, the true test of Chlorotech's legacy lies in its ability to sustain life in an unforgiving ,desolate, and bleak future.

5. Rational

In the final design of the art piece (Task 3, figure 2.1), the composition utilizes leading lines to direct the viewer's attention towards the central focal point, the large machine, establishing a clear visual hierarchy. The emphasis on the glowing liquid within the machine, achieved through lighting techniques, further captivates the viewer's gaze. Incorporating multiple sci-fi elements throughout the artwork creates a cohesive sense of unity and repetition. The stark contrast between the dark-colored metal and the vividly saturated colors of the liquid enhances visual interest. Additionally, the inclusion of a subject clad in white adds scale and proportion to the overall composition. Furthermore, adhering to the rule of thirds ensures a balanced design.

In contrast, figures 2.2 and 2.3, representing product posters for ChloroTech Inc.'s Oxy-Gen V2, adopt distinct stylistic approaches. Figure 2.2 evokes a dark, dystopian ambiance, serving to illustrate the bleak reality of the current environment. Conversely, figure 2.3 employs a brighter, more vibrant aesthetic, appealing to a sense of optimism and comfort. This deliberate contrast in style reflects the intended messaging and target audience. Symmetrical compositions in both posters emphasize the central focus on the product, fostering a sense of balance. The strategic use of wording frames the product effectively and guides the viewer's attention to key information. Furthermore, figure 2.3 utilizes vivid, contrasting colors to enhance its visual appeal, aligning with contemporary advertising practices.

Feedback:
After some discussions with Dr. Charles at the end of Task 2, I had the idea of creating a virtual forest from the perspective of the red suit scientist.

After attempting that, Dr Charles suggested I create something more offensive. That caused me great confusion as I didnt understand what he meant by offensive. Further discussion and advice from Dr Charles was required.

After feeling unsure on the direction to head towards, I decided to create something else that could resemble a tree, which was when I created this machine that produces oxygen instead of it being an actual tree. Dr Charles liked the idea! From there, I understood what he meant when he said to make it offensive

He proceeded to come up with a story line and company, "Chlorotech inc." that was selling this "tree".

  1. Keep offending! You have amazing skills! But you need to use them to provoke, motivate, create bold statements! Only then will you capitalize on the very composition principles/rules you need to use or perhaps break! Catch you around!
