Experience

At the start of end of this module it became pretty clear that design research is a significant part of being a designer as its used for market research as well as general advancement of knowledge.

When I started conducting research, I was pretty confident that environment design would have a huge impact on my immersed players feel in game but not the significance of environment design when it came to storytelling. Iv’e always believed that when the world feels detailed and believable, players would get more emotionally involved in the games story.

Observations

As I dove deeper into my research, it became clear that environment design really does impact the way players feel and approach playing the game. I noticed that players often highlighted how things like lighting, sound design and the overall atmosphere of the environment made them feel more connected to the game.

The role of environments serve more than just a backdrop; they played an emotional role in the game, helping players feel like they were the main character of the video game. I also noticed that when players feel more connected to the world, they explore the game world more, engaging with the environment in a more natural and immersive way

Findings

After the last task of conducting my own data analysis, it became obvious that the environment design just help with the narrative delivery but more so adds to the immersion of the player.

I found that open-world environments, in particular, allowed players to experience the story in a more personal and non-linear way, which enhanced their overall gameplay experience. Using open-world designs allows the player to intuitively explore the game and figure out the game narrative themselves. This in turn makes the player feel more connected to the game.
